How Does Meal Delivery Work?
From sign-up to doorstep to dinner - what to expect, from people who ran the operation.
If you've never used a meal-delivery service, the mechanics are simpler than the marketing makes them look. Here's the whole flow, including the parts sign-up pages gloss over.
1. You pick a plan
You choose how many meals or servings per week and usually a diet preference. Most services are subscriptions billed weekly, though you can typically pause or skip - and some have no subscription at all.
2. You choose meals (or they choose for you)
Each week you select from a rotating menu or let the service auto-pick. Menus range from ~15 to 100+ items. Miss the cutoff-day deadline and you get the defaults.
3. It's packed and shipped cold
This is the part we obsessed over running six production kitchens. Meals are packed with ice packs and insulation, then shipped chilled or frozen. National brands use carriers (1-3 days transit); regional services often hand-deliver locally, which can arrive fresher. The box is fine on the porch for a few hours thanks to the cold packs.
4. You store it
Prepared meals keep refrigerated for several days (check the label) or freeze; meal-kit ingredients are meant to be cooked within a few days. We cover this in how long meal kits last.
5. You cook - or just heat
With a meal kit, follow the recipe card (25-40 min). With a prepared meal like Factor, microwave the tray 2-3 minutes. That's the difference that matters most - see meal kits vs. prepared meals.
6. You manage it week to week
Skip weeks, change plans, or cancel. Find that skip/cancel flow before signing up. New to all this? Start with our match quiz or read is meal delivery worth it.
